First at all, thanks very much for the reactions mostly positive on the construction of a statistical platform. Whenever possible when replying try to do it through the Forum or TBX mailing list in order to get the amplest audience. It is important to spread the word. I’m still hoping to get more reactions. The plan is to collect as many reactions as possible among TBX members and outsiders as well. By September or early October we should have enough people from where to get a list of potential members for the steering committee. This should not be considered as definitive: new add-ons can be considered later on.
There have been already some suggestions on the way the platform should be built up. Some people consider SAS as a good option. Many people already use it; it’s got many features for data warehousing and analyzing. In that case, the role of the community here would be a platform for the interchange of analytical protocols among users, and maybe to develop a “how to” book of recipes for breeders. Things lacking would be sophisticated mixed models for complex pedigrees. It’s commercial ware coming from a big name, which is not bad in itself, but constrains developments to just those of general interest.
Other suggestions go to the use of Treeplan. I have not direct experience on this program, but it is a sophisticated BLUP machine managing large and complex datasets. On the down side, it is expensive, very expensive I have heard, and lacks other statistical functions. It’s not a general purpose package.
It has also been suggested that the package DIOGENE could serve as inspiration for our project. This is a general purpose statistical package made for plant breeders and doing all kinds of analyses of variance, selection indexes, G by E, spatial analyses, etc. It’s lacking a BLUP machine. Philippe Baradat is DIOGENE’s developer.
These are some of the suggestions so far. I’m keeping a record for all of them, which will help the steering committee later on in the search and identification of feasible solutions.
So, please, react to this and bring to the open your opinions.
